What’s Carnauba Wax?

Carnauba is the name of a tree that grows in northeastern Brazil. It’s a type of palm tree called a Copernica Cerifera. But don’t worry about memorizing that. You’re probably just wondering why it shows up all over the web on liquid car wax and car polish websites. Well, in that case, you should know that the Copernica Cerifera tree is sometimes referred to as the “Tree of Life” because it grows steadily, reaching average heights of 25-35 feet! How is this tree so strong? One word, carnauba.

Carnauba is actually the waxy substance on the leaves of the palm tree that prevents it from dehydrating, and protects it from the very hot UV rays of the sun. In its natural form, carnauba wax consists of flaky clumps or powder, which takes quite a bit of processing to turn it into the form of wax you apply to your vehicle. But carnauba isn’t just used in car wax and car care products. In fact, carnauba forms the foundation for many cosmetics products, pharmaceuticals, ointments, candles, carbon paper, inks, and much more.
